Bout of Books 10.0 !!

with 1 comment
http://boutofbooks.blogspot.com

I LOVE readathons! I cohosted a large one in December that was awesome and I have been needing one. I have been doing pretty good as far as reading, but I love readathons and have been missing the excitement they bring to read.

I will be updating you guys on the exact books I end up reading, but my goal is some where between 4-7. I have an AP test on the 13th and just a lot going on with school.

Here is some info on the readathon:
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 10 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

Excerpt: Lil stood firm, sword-in-hand, staring at the beast as it flew directly at her. “How do I kill it?” She raised the sword above her head with two hands. Hudson glanced at her. “With what we taught you. The dragon is no different than a man.” “It has wings and is flying at me. I’d say it’s different!”

Publisher Spotlight: Patchwork-Press

with No comments
test
Patchwork-Press is a publishing company comprised of only self-published authors combined the best of both worlds. I found out about them through the YA WordNerds on youtube as well as through netgalley. I had a senior English project which involved an interview with a company that is in my field of choice. I sent Patchwork-Press questions because it is a publishing company that is owned by writers that would be able to provide answers as well as advice for both parts of the industry.

April 29th is their 1 year anniversary, so I decided to do a week of spotlight posts as a thank you for being so kind and genuine when answering my questions.

About Patchwork-Press:

At Patchwork Press, we believe that both the traditional publishing and independent publishing models present worthwhile opportunities for authors, and aim to utilize aspects of both in order to create quality work for readers. We are not a traditional publisher–our authors keep 100% of their rights and royalties–, but by joining forces with other independent authors, each book we publish becomes stronger.
At this stage, our aim is to work with a growing group of talented, self-published authors who love YA/NA as much as we do in order to give each book published by Patchwork Press a team of people to ensure its success. We are also taking part in and organizing a variety of projects (such as our NetGalley co-op) to help indie authors reach larger audiences.
Patchwork Press is a joint American-Canadian publishing venture founded by Kellie Sheridan and Erica Crouch.

Excerpt:
The warm, squirrely sensation festering in my gut grew stronger with each second that passed. Despite my best efforts to ignore it, and him, I finally gave in and looked over my shoulder. I was immediately sorry I’d done so.

Jet eyes filled with what appeared to be a heavy amount of disgust regarded me coolly. I frowned and glanced down at my feet, insecurity smothering me like a thick blanket. Why was he mean mugging me? I didn’t know him. He didn’t know me. Why was he so pissed?
I took a chance and dared another peek in his direction. I was shocked to find him glaring at me still, his expression angrier if that were even possible.

He crossed his arms over his chest and raised a brow. “Seriously? You’re just gonna stand there and look pretty the entire period? How ‘bout you at least move out of the way so the rest of us can get what we need?”

I blanched, unable to speak, let alone move. In another circumstance, I’d feel giddy about his reference to my “being pretty”, but as it stood, I felt sick. Clearly irritated, a healthy dose of sarcasm coated his deep voice. Why were there never any holes around when you needed them? I was ready to crawl into one and assume the fetal position.

“Back off, asshat,” Erin snapped. She brushed past me and opened the cupboard I’d been standing in front of, and pulled out a stack of aprons. With a huff, she snatched an aging blue apron from the top of the pile and flung it at my handsome hater, the soft cotton fabric hitting him in the face. “She’s new and doesn’t know where everything is yet.”

He didn’t say anything else; just scowled for what I assumed he felt was good measure before pulling a ball of pastry dough out of the small refrigerator below.

“Ignore him,” Erin said, as she handed me an apron. “Bodie Scott is a douche with a bad temper, and totally not worth your time.”

I mashed my lips together and gave her a nod, doing my best to ignore the pang of hurt whirling in my chest, and the odd tingling sensation skimming across my flesh. My short time at Grant High thus far had been anything but great. I’d been heckled by a group of Victoria Secret Angel wannabes. I’d flirted with a hot guy who turned out to be dating the one person who’d tried to befriend me. For reasons unknown to me, I’d pissed off the only other guy I’d come across in ages who’d had any sort of impact on me. If the morning’s events were any indicator of how the rest of my day would be, I was screwed.

Review: Mortality by Kellie Sheridan

Title: Mortality
Series: The Hitchhiker's Strain
Author: Kellie Sheridan
Genre: YA Post-Apocalyptic
Pages: 280
Format: E-book
Received: Purchased
Published: March 19th by Patchwork-Press
Stars: 5/5

Book Description:
After surviving a deadly plague outbreak, sixteen-year-old Savannah thought she had lived through the very worst of human history. There was no way to know that the miracle vaccine would put everyone at risk for a fate worse than un-death.

Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore.

Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Review:
Mortality is a young adult post-apocalyptic zombie story that will have you on the edge of your seat. Kellie Sheridan tells two stories simultaneously that intertwine to create Mortality. The two narrators Savannah and Zarah fight their way through a world full of zombies, but ultimately their biggest enemy are those still living who have their own agendas. They fight for love, friendship, and their lives. Morality was an amazing book and I was hooked from chapter one.

Zombie stories have been told many times. Kellie Sheridan was able to put a unique spin of the idea of a virus making people crave human flesh. It was extremely creative that she made it her own. In this story the spread of the original virus wasn't as widespread as most stories. Therefore people were able to create a vaccine, but said vaccine had some very bad side effects. It was really interesting and different from anything I have read or seen.

Sometimes multiple point of views don't always work and sometimes you end up gravitating towards the original narrator because you have a longer connection to them. I think the use of both Savannah and Zarah worked great in this book. Further more, I loved that Kellie Sheridan wrote more chapters in Savannah's P.O.V because you start this story with her and she is in the present. I never had that feeling when I was waiting for a Savannah chapter because Zarah's were few in between. At the same time I enjoyed reading from Zarah's P.O.V because we got to see what happened during the initial outbreak and the second outbreak, which wasn't shown in Savannah's perspective.

Savannah is hands down my favorite character in this book. I really connected with her determination and ambition. She wasn't going to settle for greatly completing a simple task ; she wanted to accomplish a difficult task whether or not she did is a different story. She isn't perfect and she makes mistakes, but she always tries to right her wrongs. Lately in YA, we are seeing these perfect heroines/heroes who time and time again rise to the occasion and miraculously save the day. Yes this is fiction, but I want realistic characters who fall down and can then pick them selves back up.

The turn of events with Zarah were absolutely crazy. I was so not expecting that to happen at all. I loved how Kellie Sheridan wrote her transition through that. Her writing style in the mind set of someone who is infected was incredible. It felt like I was reading from someone who was truly losing them self and that someone was only compelled by their need for food.

The is romance in this book, but it never over shadowed the conflicts in the book. There are two main relationships in this book. Zarah and Liam are a couple that we don't necessarily see fall in love, but you get to see them in love. I loved them together, and what made them work was that they would have done anything for each other. Then there is Savannah and Cole, as romances go they weren't my favorite. There relationship is still very new, but I am just not the biggest fan of him. I like him as a character, but I also don't trust him. Hopefully in the next book I will like Cole more.

I loved how through out this story both narrators are pretty close to each other and as the reader you are constantly waiting for them to meet. They finally do right at the end of the book. I can't believe what happened, it was completely crazy. I have so many feelings about it.

I can't wait to read Duality. I need to know what happens next and how Savannah, Liam, and Cole are going to get through all of this. I also really want to read End Dayz, the prequel that sheds light of the pasts of Alex, Belle, Zack, and Pierce. This book is definitely for fans of The Walking Dead and The Forrest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. I can't recommend this book enough.
